CopyHour Review: How I Became A Well-Paid Freelance Copywriter
I never expected to write a CopyHour review.
I mean, sure…
I was one of the ORIGINAL CopyHour members, way back before it was even a real product…
…but I never expected to write a review like this.
I honestly had no idea where copywriting would take me.
And yet, here I am.
Getting paid as much as $20,000-35,000 per project. Working at home (or on the road). Living the lifestyle of my dreams. Living life on my terms.
But it wasn’t always like this.
This CopyHour Review Almost Didn’t Happen
Right before I went through CopyHour, I almost ran out of money while living on a tiny little tropical island in The Philippines.
I literally had $119.37 left in my bank account…
I needed money. And I needed it fast.
Otherwise, I’d be forced to borrow money and catch a one-way plane home.
That’s when I met Derek Johanson, the creator of CopyHour.
We’d connected through an online mastermind group we were both members of.
We were both struggling with sales and marketing in our business, and we both knew something needed to change.
He suggested that we get together and do Gary Halbert’s famous exercise where you write out sales letters and ads by hand.
Desperate for a solution to my money problem, I jumped on board and said I’d do it.
In the end, it was 4 guys.
Derek, me, Clay and another guy.
We met once a week on Skype and talked marketing and sales.
We shared tips, tricks and strategies.
We reviewed each others’ copy.
And yes, we studied famous sales letters and ads and tried to figure out why they worked so well.
Within a month or two of starting this mastermind, I launched a new product and generated a few thousand dollars.
It was far from “FU money”, but it solved my money problem (and led to this CopyHour review).
I was hooked.
At the end of the mastermind, Derek suggested continuing but in a different format.
Instead of meeting once a week on Skype, his idea was to send out a sales letter or ad each day to the group, and we’d all have to write it out by hand. Then we’d log into an online forum, post our insights, questions and comments about the sales letter or ad, and discuss things together.
This is where the name “CopyHour” comes from.
Spend an hour a day writing out famous sales letters and ads by hand.
I threw myself into it eagerly, like a child running around in snow for the first time in his life.
I’d caught the copywriting bug, and I wasn’t going to let it go.
Copywriting was my ticket to freedom.
I knew that if I could figure out how to write words that sell, I’d ALWAYS have a job. It didn’t matter what was going on in the world, or what the economy was doing. If I could make the cash register ring, businesses and clients would forever beat a path to my door.
Alas, that’s exactly what’s happened.
Since completing CopyHour, way back in 2012, my life has been a near fairy-tale ever since.
I’ve had my share of ups and downs financially, but one way or another, I always pull through thanks to copywriting and the skills I learned from CopyHour.
Where many people get stuck in business, not knowing how to bring in sales when it really counts, I’ve been able to turn on the “money tap” any time I like.
The actual nuts and bolts of CopyHour is pretty simple.
You spend an hour a day writing out old sales letters for a few months.
That’s all there is to it.
So can’t you just do it on your own?
Sure you can.
You can find great sales letters, emails and ads all over the internet… just waiting for you to get a pen and paper and write them out by hand.
So no, you don’t need CopyHour to write copy out for an hour a day.
BUT don’t be tricked into thinking that your best option is to do it alone, without coughing up the entry fee for CopyHour.
See, there’s a certain magic that comes with investing money into something.
You’re more likely to actually do it. You take it more seriously. You stick with it instead of only lasting a few days or weeks.
So don’t make the mistake in this CopyHour review of thinking you can just do it on your own for free.
Technically, you can… but you won’t get anywhere near the same results as if you pay for it.
That’s just talking about the benefit of paying for something.
There’s also the fact that it’s all organized for you. You don’t have to find all the sales letters yourself. They just arrive in your inbox each morning. Minimal effort required to stay organised. Therefore, minimal effort to stay focused and on track.
Then there’s the community.
Back when I did CopyHour, we used an online forum to communicate.
Since then, Derek’s upgraded the community into a private Facebook Group, with live webinars, group chats and bonus resources, in addition to the usual discussion threads for each sales letter.
So you see, there’s much more to CopyHour than simply writing out sales letters, emails and ads by hand.
If you do it alone, you’ll NEVER get as much value from the practice.
I’ve gotta hand it to Derek…
He took Gary Halbert’s “hands on experience” exercise to the next level, with VERY impressive results.
Oh, and don’t think I’m the only successful freelance copywriter to come out of CopyHour.
Turns out, there’s a whole bunch of us writing stellar CopyHour reviews…
Blake Sterling got his first paid client in just 8 weeks:
CopyHour has changed my life for the better. In just 8 weeks I got my first paid client and more lining up at the door. 8 weeks ago I had no idea how to write ‘copy’ and I really didn’t have a clue what ‘copy’ was. Now I see this new skill massively changing my life
Sean Ogle increased his sales by 35%:
I bought CopyHour not knowing what to expect. 3 weeks later I’m actually confident in my ability to write a good sales letter and sales are up 35% since I rewrote just 1 section of my current sales letter. I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like when I finish my 8 weeks. Thanks for giving me a template to follow, otherwise I’d never have done this.
And famed Dan Ferrari is making more money on less time:
CopyHour has been awesome for me. I am freelance copy writer and the work I have done since joining CopyHour has been killing it – selling a lot of my client’s products. The clients are obviously thrilled and I have had some real heavy hitters tell me my stuff is “brilliant”. I’m getting a lot of work these days. The rates I am able to charge have gone up and the amount of pitch work I am having to do has dropped substantially. In other words, I am making more money on less time. It’s been an incredibly worthwhile investment of my time and money.
When it comes to this CopyHour review, there’s no doubt in my mind:
CopyHour works… IF you take action.
